The 8 Greatest Challenges for People with ADHD

From a survey completed by participants at r/adhd and complied by Cynthia Hammer, MSW

1. Getting started.  The need to clear my brain of many issues before I am ready to take on mundane tasks.

2. Keeping my home clear of clutter.

3. Finishing essential tasks that are actually easy

4. Waiting until the last day to complete an important assignment and then staying up all night to finish—panic-stricken.

5.  Time blindness—and always being late.

6.  Losing important items: keys, credit cards, license, wallet, glasses, phone, etc.

7. Finishing a task.  I get 15 things started but not one of them is finished.  Or be gung ho for something only to fizzle out before completing.

8. Emotional dysregulation—the negative aspects of being highly sensitive.

Cynthia Hammer, MSW

Cynthia Hammer, MSW, was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD in 1992 when she was 49 years old. The following year she created the non-profit organization, ADD Resources, with a mission to educate adults and helping professionals about ADHD in adults. She ran the organization for 15 years before retiring.

During the Covid isolation she wrote a book about her life with inattentive ADHD which should be published by the end of this year. In writing the book, she was dismayed to learn that children with inattentive ADHD continue to be under-diagnosed and adults with inattentive ADHD often are incorrectly diagnosed with depression or anxiety.

She created a new non-profit in 2021, the Inattentive ADHD Coalition (www.iadhd.org), to create more awareness about inattentive ADHD and the need for early diagnosis and treatment.
