Do People with ADHD Need to Be Fixed?
by Cynthia Hammer, MSW, Author of the book, Living with Inattentive ADHD
It is commonly said by many, that people with ADHD don’t need to be fixed. It is our environment that causes our struggles. While I can give some credence to that point of view, I don’t think that provides a full explanation for the challenges of living with ADHD. Sure, it would help to have a more compassionate and understanding culture, but that is not the whole of it.
It bothers me when helping professionals declare, “People with ADHD don’t need to be fixed.”
Speaking for my self, “Why go to doctors, therapists and coaches if we don’t need or want to be fixed? Why practice new strategies and tactics to improve aspects of our lives, if we didn’t want to be fixed?” Why am I happier now, after I have fixed myself as much as I can?
Discovering my passion enabled me to function better, but taking medicine and creating good habits was how I “fixed” myself to letting my brilliance shine forth.
