Unpacking the Power of ADHD Medication: Understanding Efficacy and Overcoming Fear
by Cynthia Hammer, MSW, Author of the book, Living with Inattentive ADHD
Medication is the most effective treatment of ADHD. Valid research demonstrates this. There is no treatment as effective as medication for ADHD. We are fortunate to have such an effective treatment.
Those of us with ADHD (Inattentive or not) have a brain chemistry or brain wiring problem which medication helps correct. However, medication doesn’t help everyone and it won’t, by itself, improve all aspects of your inattentive life.
About 20% of people with ADHD who try medicine never find one that they can tolerate or that helps them. But with 54 medications available to treat ADHD, it is more likely, working with your physician, you will find one that works for you.
The degree of stigma and fear about ADHD medication is unreasonable and needs to be balanced by the concern for life problems when ADHD goes untreated. Learn from reliable resources about the effectiveness of medication such as www.adhdevidence.org
It is sad that I originally wrote this post three years ago and it is still value today. Too many stay poorly informed about the benefits of ADHD medication.
